M ar 1 99 6 Brightest Cluster Galaxy Profile Shapes
We model the surface brightness profiles of a sample of 119 Abell Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG), finding a generalised deVaucouleurs R law, where n is a free parameter, to be appropriate. Departures from the R law are shown to be a real feature of galaxy profiles, not due to observational errors or coupling of n with the other model parameters. BCG typically have values of n greater than 4. ...
متن کاملBrightest Cluster Galaxy Formation in Low - Redshift Galaxy Clusters
We present the composite luminosity function of a sample of 17 low-redshift galaxy clusters. Our luminosity functions have been measured for an inner region (r ≤ r 200) and an outer region (r 200 ≤ r ≤ 2r 200) centred on each Brightest Cluster Galaxy. The inner region luminosity function has a significantly flatter faint-end slope (α inner = −1.81 ± 0.02) than the outer region (α outer = −2.07 ...
متن کاملRevisiting Brightest Cluster Galaxy Evolution with the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey
We investigate the influence of environment on brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) evolution using a sample of 63 clusters at 0.3 ≤ z ≤ 0.9 drawn primarily from the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey and follow-up V , I, and K ′ photometry. The luminosity evolution of the entire BCG sample is not adequately described by a single evolutionary model. Using the integrated light from the cluster detect...
متن کاملIntracluster Light in Nearby Galaxy Clusters: Relationship to the Halos of Brightest Cluster Galaxies
We present a detailed analysis of the surface brightness distribution of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in each of 24 galaxy clusters at 0.03 < z < 0.13. We use two-dimensional profile fitting to model the surface brightness out to r = 300 kpc for each BCG, comparing r1/4, r1/n, and double r1/4 models. We obtain statistically superior fits using a two component model consisting of a pair of...
متن کامل6 Witnessing the formation of a brightest cluster galaxy at z > 2
We present deep observations taken with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys of the central massive galaxy in a forming cluster at z = 2.2. The galaxy hosting the powerful radio source MRC 1138–262 is associated with one of the most extensive merger systems known in the early universe. Our HST/ACS image shows many star-forming galaxies merging within a ∼200 kpc region that emits both diffuse lin...
